Webinar Description: As counsellors we are using technology more and more as a way to help others without physical or geographical borders. This reality comes with huge potential as well as enormous challenges to keep our professional mindset intact while opening our minds to adapt to virtual realities and master the art of creating intimacy and connection through virtual spaces. To create a therapeutical online environment requires a considerable set of cultural, emotional and phenomenological abilities in order to make our work both therapeutical and have it accesible to all. This webinar – TRANSCULTURAL ONLINE COUNSELING – looks to reflect upon these matters as well as to develop tools to create virtual therapeutical spaces – facing the challenges with wisdom, humility and intentionality.
Desiree Carlson: Desiree Carlson is a psychotherapist with extensive professional experience. Desiree has developed and implemented a wide variety of therapeutic programs for youth, adults, men, women, singles, and couples. Desiree is a renowned national and international therapist, designer and instructor, who is skilled at facilitating seminars, workshops, trainings, and conferences, as well as providing individualized counselling services for individuals and groups. Desiree is licensed as a counsellor, psychotherapist, and skills coach. She joined the IAC Executive Council in May 2019, in order to bring connection and evolution to counselling in Latin American countries. Desiree has dedicated over 10 years to the development of a therapy without borders through a phenomenological perspective.

At the 2018 World Health Organization (WHO) Mental Health Forum, IAC President, Dr. Dione Mifsud, and IAC CEO, Naoise Kelly, were very pleased to meet Dr. Devorah Kestel, the new Director of the WHO Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse (MSD).
The WHO Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP) aims at scaling up services for mental, neurological and substance use disorders for countries especially with low- and middle-income. The programme asserts that with proper care, psychosocial assistance and medication, tens of millions could be treated for depression, schizophrenia, and epilepsy, prevented from suicide and begin to lead normal lives– even where resources are scarce.
Furthe Information on WHO and the mhGAP programme can be seen HERE.

Conference Theme: "Counselling Issues and Processes Across Ages and Cultures" - Counselling services are often important when people are experiencing life and environmental changes. These services are of heightened importance in the current context of rapidly changing social and economic conditions in many countries, including forced migration, that have had a large impact on people’s lives. The counselling profession is in various stages of development in different cultural settings and in most countries it is growing and evolving. Given changes in contextual conditions and the evolving nature of the counselling profession around the world, it is vital that there is ongoing communication among counselling researchers and professionals to better serve the needs of the clients and communities that we serve. The following sub-themes will guide the presentations and discussions at the conference. For all of the sub-themes, heightened importance will be given to ways in which they focus on marginalized and vulnerable groups, including Indigenous peoples and issues related to human rights, gender equality and the empowerment of women.
Conference Sub-Themes:
- Multidisciplinary lenses in the counselling profession
- Evolution of inter-professional collaboration
- Counselling practice: issues and challenges in different cultural contexts
- Counselling research and services across the life span
- Counselling research and services for disadvantaged populations

Pictured (R to L) are: Dr Mark van Ommeren - Public Policy advisor at the WHO. Dr Van Ommeren will be speaking at the IAC conference in Italy, in 2018. Beside him is Dr Shekhar Saxena - Director of the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse at the WHO. Next is Ann Lindsey – Chair, Mental Health F4H, Geneva. IAC is very grateful to Ann for representing IAC at the WHO for 10 years, until 2010. On the far left is Naoise Kelly, CEO of IAC. More photos can be viewed on the IAC Facebook page.
IAC was pleased to attend the 2017 WHO mhGAP Forum. The two days of activity provided an excellent opportunity for a diverse group of mental health stakeholders to discuss a variety of issues, all related to the implementation of WHO’s Mental Health Action Plan 2013-2020. The Forum’s theme and focus – Mental Health in the workplace – was discussed and the WHO launched an mhGAP app (available on ios only for now) on World Mental Health Day (10th October). The Forum included time available for informal networking.
At the above link you will find several WHO resources that aim to help reduce the mental health treatment gap and to enhance response to the large burden of mental, neurological and substance use disorders worldwide.
IAC wishes to gratefully acknowledge the WHO for their invitation to participate at this outstanding event. We greatly look forward to enhancing our partnership and collaboration with WHO and its many initiatives.
