What is the IAC?

The International Association for Counselling (IAC) is the world body for the counselling profession. Established in 1966, IAC is an International Non-Governmental Organization (INGO). IAC's humanitarian movement advances the development of counselling in order to improve people’s lives and well-being. Our association and members strive for human rights and the inclusive, sustainable development of our profession through the promotion of counselling, best practice and international cooperation.

What are the benefits of membership of the IAC?

Being members of IAC means that you, or your organisation, are better connected to the global developments that are taking place in the counselling profession. You gain from the benefits of IAC membership in a number of ways. There are many tangible benefits (e.g. Journal access, free webinars, certificates of membership, newsletters etc.), and equally important intangible ones, such as showing your support for IAC's humanitarian and developmental aims to advance the counselling profession worldwide. Membership also shows support for our major projects including the 'World Mapping of the Counselling Profession' a major counseling research project endorsed by the United Nations. What we do: Using our Regionalised structure (IAC Africa, IAC Europe, IAC Asia-Pacific, IAC North America, IAC Latin America and the Caribbean, IAC Middle East and Central Asia), our work-plans focus on the following priority areas:

  1. Education, Research and Practice Programmes

  2. Advocacy for the Counselling Profession with Regional and U.N. Bodies

  3. Agreeing Region-Wide Counselling Standards

  4. Supporting National Associations

  5. Advocacy for the Legal Recognition of Counselling (where not in place)

  6. Assisting in the development of counselling in countries (where there is currently none).
